educational programs

Riding the Wind, Exploring the anatomy of flight: (2-3 hours)

Have you ever wondered how birds fly? Learn about the mechanics of flight by comparing the anatomy of birds with the design, construction and aerodynamics of kites or gliders. In this program kids will decorate, assemble, and fly (weather permitting) a kite or glider.

Nature & Art, Collecting plants and making natural dyes: (4 hours)

Native Americans used plant materials to make beautiful, soft colors to dye wool, cotton, and other fibers. They made almost every color, though shades of yellow were the easiest to produce. This two-part program takes kids on an exploration of the park to collect native plants to use in creating dyes. The plant materials will be collected and processed by the kids early in the day, will soak/steep for a few hours during the afternoon, and then the dyes produced will be used to make tie-dye patterns on fabric.

Jr. GPS, Scavenger Hunt: (2-3 hours)

Learn about global positioning systems by using GPS units to navigate a course through the park. Each waypoint on the course has an activity box with games and surprises (shorter course than the adults, and supervised activities).

I Love the Nightlife, Night-time insect collecting: (2-3 hours)

Moths are a fascinating member of the insect kingdom. In this program kids will use a concoction of moth bait, a light source and a sheet of fabric to trap and collect moths to observe and identify.

Nature Trackers, Making casts of animal tracks: (2-3 hours)

Exploring the trails and beaches of the park in search of tracks is a fun introduction to the diet, behavior, and anatomy of native Texas animals. In this program kids locate animal tracks, attempt to identify the animal, and make a plaster cast.

To be fully prepared for your trip: you should bring along a pair of hiking or running shoes (aqua shoes are a great option), bathing suit, camera, sunglasses, sunscreen, toiletries, a hat, and appropriate clothing for the weather conditions of the day.

Book Early: Our educational programs typically sells-out several weeks in advance. To insure your trip date make your reservations early.
